The Social Security Disability Application Process

Although no one can guarantee that you will receive Social Security disability benefits and the process can be frustrating, if you are approved, the reward is monthly payments, often for life. If you have a disability, applying for disability is definitely worth a try.

Prerequisites

In order to receive Social Security disability benefits, you must show to the satisfaction of an SSA application reviewer or Administrative Law Judge that you are unable to work a job due to physical or mental Social Security disability makes sure my grandson is taken care ofconditions. You do not have to prove you cannot do any work at all or are completely incapacitated in order to be approved.

This can make the process subjective to the reviewer's personal feelings and often benefits are denied when they should not be. A good Social Security disability lawyer can be your "ace in the hole" to help you get past the personal feelings of the reviewers. Contact the Cochran Firm Disability Lawyers today by filling out the form to the right for a FREE disability case evaluation.

How to Apply for Disability Benefits

     1. First, complete the form on this page to request your FREE case evaluation, then proceed to the  Social Security Administration's website and complete the online Social Security disability application. If you need personal assistance to complete the application, you can contact the closest Social Security office to you. (Mississippi Social Security offices are listed HERE)

     2. A week or so after you apply you will receive  additional forms by mail for you to complete and return.

     3. A few weeks after you return the first packet, you will receive another packet to complete that focuses on how your disability affects your daily life and the ability to work. There is a deadline to return the paperwork, so do not procrastinate.

     4. Once the paperwork is complete, the SSA will begin the review and contact your doctors for medical records. Be sure to keep all of your medical appointments and follow your doctor's orders.

     5. The Administration may request that you be examined by one of their doctors or have tests conducted to confirm your disability. Usually examinations and tests are paid for by the government.

     6. Most claims complete the initial review process and decision-making within three to six months. The SSA will send you a letter advising of their decision. If benefits are approved you should receive your first check in approximately sixty days.

If You Have been Denied Disability benefits

Almost 65% of Social Security disability applications are denied by the first SSA reviewer. If this happens to you, a denial does not mean that you are permanently denied. You have sixty days to appeal the denial. If you have not already, now is a good time to contact the Cochran Firm Disability Lawyers and ask for assistance with the appeal. You can receive a FREE disability case evaluation by filling out the form on this page.
